Contemporary Watercolour Paintings

by Suman Ghosh

Paintings inspired by people, moments, memories and the world around me — expressed through the transparency, spontaneity and unpredictability of watercolour.

For me, painting begins with observation. A face, a gesture, a particular light, a familiar place or sometimes an old memory can stay with me long enough to become a painting.

I am interested not only in what something looks like, but in what it makes me feel.

My work moves between observation and interpretation. Some paintings remain close to reality, while others become more expressive, allowing colour, water, texture and unfinished marks to become part of the story.

My Work

Watercolour is a medium that never gives complete control. Pigment moves, edges disappear, colours merge and accidents happen.

I enjoy working somewhere between that freedom and the discipline of drawing — allowing the painting to develop naturally without losing the character of the subject.

About

Suman Ghosh

Painting has always been a part of my visual world.

I am a self-taught artist and visual designer based in Bhopal, India. After spending more than three decades working with images, design and communication, painting remains the most personal part of my creative practice.

My subjects often come from life — people, expressions, everyday observations and memories. More recently, I have also begun exploring Indian mythology and familiar cultural imagery through my own visual language.

Watercolour is the medium I return to most. I am fascinated by its transparency, its unpredictability and the way a single brushstroke can suggest far more than it describes.
